"Only through art can we emerge from ourselves
and know what another person sees."
Joann Dufau Slater
Art is fascinating because it expresses an artist's personal response to the world based on when and where he exists. It thus offers the viewer a connection not only to the artist's mind but to the context in which he lived. My first introduction to art history was a European trip I took as a child with my father, who was an artist. The medieval cathedrals, cobblestone streets, and the incredible art museums made a lasting impression and sparked a lifelong curiosity for art. At the University of California, Los Angeles, I focused on 19th and 20th century european art and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Art History. I further pursued this passion by living and studying in Europe, mainly France and Italy.
Over the next 30 years, I explored different areas of art as a painter, printmaker, gallerist, and art consultant. I developed an expertise of art and of the art markets before entering the field of Personal Property Appraisal. At the University of California, Irvine I completed the Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts program. This program is taught in conjunction with the American Society of Appraisers (ASA). Presently, I am Candidate Member of the American Society of Appraisers with a designation in Fine Art.
